Okechukwu Ezugwu, fondly known as Okey, is the CEO of OakFil Productions, a Lagos-based film production company. With over 28 years of active participation in the Nigerian film industry, Okey has become a household name, celebrated for his remarkable contributions to Nollywood.
Okeyโs journey into the film industry is as inspiring as it
is unique. After completing his high school education at the prestigious St.
Theresa College, he gained admission to the University of
Nigeria for higher education. However, the sudden demise of his father
placed the responsibility of caring for his large polygamous family on his
shoulders. At this critical juncture, his kinsman and veteran actor Kenneth
Okonkwo offered him two choices: to support his university education
or to introduce him to the business of filmmaking. After days of introspection,
Okey chose to embark on the path of filmmaking, stepping into the uncharted
waters of Nigeriaโs then-emerging film industry.
In 1997, Okey joined Kenneth Okonkwo in
Lagos, where Kenneth mentored him on the rudiments of the industry. Between 2001
and 2003, Okey served as the producer for Kennethโs movies. In 2003,
he founded OakFil Productions, which has since grown into a
household name in the Nigerian film industry.
Over the years, Okey has produced over 100 movies,
cementing his reputation as a prolific filmmaker. His 2024 film OJOCHE
was selected for screening at the 13th edition of the African International
Film Festival (AFRIFF) in November 2024.
In addition to his success in the film industry, Okechukwu
returned to academics, earning a Bachelorโs and Masterโs
degree in Political Science from the University of Nigeria,
Nsukka.
