The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted elections for the 24 seats in the Enugu State House of Assembly on March 18, 2023. The election results were unexpected and diverged from past elections where the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had consistently won all seats.
According to the INEC-declared results, the PDP won 10 seats, while the opposition Labour Party won 14 seats, granting them the majority in the upcoming assembly.
The Enugu North Zone, commonly referred to as Nsukka Zone, has 9 seats in the assembly, with the Labour Party securing 7 seats, while the PDP took two. This post will examine the individuals who will represent the zone in the next assembly
William Amuka (Igbo Etiti West)
William Amuka, who hails from Aku in Igbo Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, will be representing the people of Igbo Etiti West on the Labour Party platform. The young engineer emerged victorious by defeating his challenger, James Akadu of the PDP. Williams has several years of experience working for firms such as Setraco, Isaac Udezue and Associates, and SMEC International Pty Ltd. He is a graduate of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), where he studied civil engineering. Williams will replace Hon. James Akadu, who was elected in 2019
Ezenta Ezeani (Igbo Etiti East)
Ezenta Ezeani Ugochukwu of the Peoples Democratic Party has been reelected as the representative for Igbo Etiti East in the state assembly. Ezeani, who is the CEO of Lorenzo Power Ltd., is an engineer by profession and has been an influential member of the Enugu State House of Assembly since 2019. He is a prince of Ekwegebe Kingdom in Igbo Etiti Local Government Area.Clifford Obe (Igbo Eze North II)
Clifford Obe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is the new member representing Igbo Eze North State constituency, having defeated his Labour Party challenger in the March 18th, 2023 keenly contested election. Clifford Obe, a seasoned grassroots politician and former administrator of Igbo Eze North East Development Center, will replace Ugwu Innocent Emeka, who is the current chairman of the house committee on Commerce and Industry. Clifford Obe is from Uda in Igbo Eze North Local Government.Ejike Eze (Igbo Eze North I)
Ejike Jude Eze, popularly known as Ejikeme Nwa Nsukka, has been declared the winner of the Igbo Eze North 1 constituency seat on the Labour Party platform, defeating the Peoples Democratic Party candidate. Ejikeme, a seasoned grassroots politician, will be replacing veteran politician and current Deputy Chief Whip of the House, Hon. Ethel Ugwuanyi. During his campaign, Ejikeme promised to prioritize Agricultural development, Market development, Health, and Water and Sanitation for his constituents while in the house.
Harrison Ogara (Igbo Eze South)
Harrison Ogara of the Labour Party has been elected as the representative for Igbo Eze South in the Enugu State House of Assembly, having defeated Vitus Okechi of the PDP. Harrison Ogara, the CEO of Nsukka-based periodic newspaper “Starlight,” was the former Chief Executive of Enugu State Lottery Board and had resigned early last year to pursue his ambition of representing the people of Igbo Eze South in the state assembly. He holds a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from Federal Polytechnic, Oko, and a Masters in Mass Communication from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Harrison Ogara is from Unadu in Igbo Eze South Local Government.Pius Ezugwu (Nsukka East)
Pius Ezugwu, who ran under the platform of Labour Party, will be representing the good people of Nsukka East constituency at the Enugu State Assembly from 2023 to 2027. Ezugwu defeated Barr (Mrs.) Chritana Onah (Ijele Nwayi) of the PDP to win the highly contested seat. Pius Ezugwu has over 8 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, where he specializes in turbines and pumping systems. He currently works for “Gas & Oil Field Services Company" in Kuwait as a Coiling and Stimulation Engineer. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He will take over from Chinedu Nwamba, who has represented the area for 8 years.
