Mary Remmy-Njoku Makes Forbes List of 50 Influential Women in Africa

Mary Remmy Njoku has been named on Forbes’ annual list of the 50 most powerful women in Africa, with her picture appearing on the front page of the prestigious luxury newspaper.

The popular Nollywood actress and ROKTV boss credited her husband, Jason Njoku, calling him her halo and thanking him for his support.

The list includes women from various industries and sectors, including business, media, health, and politics. This year's cover features influential women such as the Director General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Chimamanda Adichie, Mo Abudu, Chioma Ude and Bolanle Austen Peters

Biography

Mary Remmy Njoku was born to Nigerian parents on March 20, 1985, in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos State. Mary Njoku attended Amuwo Odofin High School, Navy Town Secondary School, and the National College Gbagadaga.

After completing her secondary education, Mary Njoku attended Lagos State University where she studied English. Additionally, she studied film production at the London Film Academy.

She began her acting career in her teenage years and appeared in her first film, Home Sickness in 2004. She subsequently featured in films like ‘Brain Masters’ and ‘Sound of Love’. However, it wasn't until her role in the 2011 film, Blackberry Babes, that she gained widespread recognition.

Mary Njoku took advantage of her popularity and launched iROKtv, her own YouTube channel.

Four years later, she became the platform's main content producer and produced the movie 'They Will Be Done'. This film became the first Nollywood film to be shown on BFI IMAX in London. In 2013, she founded ROK Studios, which produced movies such as ‘Finding Mercy’, ‘Somewhere in Africa’, ‘Forgetting June’, and ‘A Northern Affair’.

Mary Njoku's business acumen and leadership skills led to ROK Studios' growth and expansion throughout Africa. The studio also launched ROK2 and ROK3 channels, and in the UK, it was included on the pay platform Sky. ROK Studios' immense success led to French television studio Canal+ acquiring it, with Mary Njoku remaining its Managing Director.

In 2012, Mary Njoku married her husband Jason Njoku in a ceremony held at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria. The wedding was attended by several Nollywood A-list celebrities, including Mercy Johnson, Oge Okoye, and Mercy Aigbe. The couple has three children: Jason Obinna Njoku, born on July 30, 2013, Nwakaego Anabelle Njoku, born on August 24, 2015, and Amber Nnenna Njoku, born on August 4, 2017.
